A master's job is
never done, it lives on through the ages.
The Installation was held on January 5, 1939 and several entertaining musical selections were enjoyed by all during the Installation.
In the January stated meeting it was brought to the attention of the Lodge that only a portion of the money necessary for the purchase of a Past Masters present was being allowed and the amount was increased to up to $50.00, a motion was carried to add $150.00 to whatever the "Prosperity Club" raised and to buy a service of dishes for 180 people. Some work was also taking place in the kitchen and $100.00 was allowed to make the necessary repairs, seems to me that was the same amount they gave us 3 years ago...hehehe.
In February it seems that all hell was breaking loose on trying to figure out what was the most important things that needed to be done around the Lodge. The motion for the dishes was rescinded, and the money spent to have the dining room walls plastered instead. It also seems that the Schools of Instruction, put on by the Inspector of the districts, were being held on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., a practice which has changed through the years.
In March the commotion over the remodeling was still going on and everything that was brought before the Lodge that had to do with spending money was defeated. However, the announcement of a visit by the Grand Master of Mason's in California on May the 8th opened the purse strings as far as they would go it seemed. Motions were carried to have woodwork painted, a new flag purchased, the ante room decorated and painted, purchasing 5 dozen new chairs. The motion to have the first 2 rows of chairs in the Lodge room cushioned lost in voting, and it amazes me why they would spend all of this money for the visit of the Grand Master and not spend it for themselves.
On May 8th the Grand Master, Most Worshipful Bro. Leon Whitsell was announced and received with Grand Honors, he gave a very entertaining discourse to the large number of people present. In this same month, ash trays were purchased and it was carried that a fine be imposed to anyone caught throwing butts on the floor.
Over the summer of 1939, the Lodge gained a new Tyler's table courtesy of Bro. Coutts, the building was painted by some of the Brethren who had their wages credited towards their dues, discussion was had to remove the belfry from the building but lost on vote, new carpet was finally purchased for the Lodge and sample number 6647 was selected by all present.
Bro. James Wilson Bittle, Past Master of Clovis Lodge, was laid to rest on September 6, 1941 and was going to be missed by Clovis Lodge for all of his service and by the community of Clovis.
